VOCAL SYNTHS

Introduction

I don't fully remember how I first stumbled upon Vocaloid music or what my first song was, but it was around 2013-2014 when I was in my edgy middle school weeb phase and primarily listening to nightcore remixes with thumbnails of random anime characters, so that should give you a clue. I was amazed by the music and accompanying characters right away, and it's been an important part of my life since then!

It's honestly really hard to narrow down the synths and songs I want to include. I have a Spotify playlist with hundreds of vocal synth songs and a YouTube playlist with around 200 more. I suppose what I'm saying is a particular song or character not being listed doesn't mean I don't like it or I haven't heard it. I am also sure there are plenty of voices, songs, and producers here that people who already consider themselves a part of the vocal synth fandom need no introduction to, but I am including them nonetheless because this is about my favorites!

My Favorite Vocal Synths

Hatsune Miku

You saw this one coming; I mean I did theme the entire page around her. What is there to even say about Miku, though? Vocaloid fan or not, who doesn't love her? When I think of both Vocaloid music I loved as a kid and music I love now, she makes up a lot of it, meaning she has had a big presence in my life for over a decade. When it comes to reasons why I like her so much outside of nostalgia and her continuous popularity, I'm sure I don't need to tell you that her design is amazing for how cute and flexible it is, the same goes for her voice!

Adachi Rei

I'm not really someone who minds that vocal synth voices have started to sound much less synthetic over time, but when it comes to Rei, the choppy robotic sound of her voice is what I love about her. I am a big fan of robot and android characters and the themes that accompany them, so I appreciate that Rei characterization and songs using her tend to lean into her robotic nature. The compilation album, MACHINA MORI, is one of my favorites and it features exclusively Rei, so I can't rei-ccomend it enough.

Eleanor Forte

I think Eleanor has one of the most beautiful voices of any vocal synth and so versatile too. It's hard to decide if I prefer high-pitched or deeper voiced Ellie more. I provided examples of both in my favorites below so you can decide for yourself. Eleanor's design and artwork are also fittingly equal parts elegant and moe. I like the handwritten letter motif and her wax seal decorations a lot. I don't know if her ribbon is exactly supposed to resemble bunny ears, but it does to me and I like that for evident reasons.

Kasane Teto

I'd been fond of Teto since around the time I first became interested in Vocaloid music and discovered a lot of the Teto classics, so I was really excited and surprised when her SynthV voicebank was announced! It was the compilation album, DAEMON/DOLL, however, that really cemented her as one of my all-time favorite vocal synths. I don't always like the fandom surrounding Teto, especially not the memes, and people can be quite snobbish about liking overrated vocal synths, but that could never stop me from loving her. One million more songs to Teto!

REML

Even though I love Reml, I am not deeply familiar with DEN-ON-BU. Her voicebank shares the same personality and background from her counterpart in the series, so that is basically the extent of my knowledge of it. Regardless, I really enjoy REML for both her voice and design! I think it's easy to understand why I think she is especially cute, seeing as she wears a horned headband and a very cute bat-winged backpack with matching earrings. What I love about REML's voice is that it sounds cutesy, but with an obvious attitude, which is why she tends to be sued in very dark-cute songs.

VY2

Listen, just to get it out of the way, I call this guy VY2 and Yuma/Yuuma interchangeably and associate him primarily, almost strictly, with the Roro design. He's just so cute I can't imagine him any other way, even if sword Yuuma is pretty cool-looking too. We don't have to talk about his A.I.VOICE design because I am still confused. People still use Yuma for some really great covers, but it would be nice if he was more actively used again because I think he has a really great voice! It made me sad when SAWTOWNE's Confessions of a Rotten Girl released and nobody knew who he was when he appeared in the MV. We're losing the ancient texts…

Like many people, I was first acquainted with Yi Xi through FLAVOR FOLEY's debut song BUTCHER VANITY. I was really impressed by how realistic her voice sounded right away as well as how unique and androgynous it was. It really stands out among female vocal synths, especially in the SynthV library. Naturally, I primarily associate Yi Xi with her VIMALION PROJECT design and characterization. I honestly think it's amazing what an iconic character they made out of her. More evil vocal synths, please.

This is only including songs that I didn't already in the above lists that I know I liked a lot from between the time I first became interested in Vocaloid music to 2018 at the very latest. I still listen to a lot of these.
